About Meteora
Meteora ("suspended in the air") is one of the world's most extraordinary landscapes — massive sandstone rock pillars, some over 300 meters tall, crowned by Byzantine monasteries built in the 14th-16th centuries by monks seeking isolation. Six monasteries remain active today, each offering stunning views, ancient frescoes, and a sense of timeless spiritual devotion. The Great Meteoron is the largest, while Varlaam and Holy Trinity (featured in a James Bond film) are equally impressive. The town of Kalambaka at the base provides comfortable accommodation, and sunset views of the monasteries glowing golden against the darkening sky are unforgettable.
