About Catania
Catania is Sicily's second city and its most energetic — a Baroque masterpiece of black lava stone and white limestone built on the ruins of seven devastating eruptions and earthquakes. The UNESCO-listed Baroque center was rebuilt after the catastrophic 1693 earthquake, creating a theatrical cityscape of grand piazzas and ornate churches. Piazza del Duomo with its elephant fountain (the Liotru) and the magnificent Cathedral are the civic heart. The vibrant fish market (La Pescheria) beneath the city walls is Sicily's most dramatic — a raucous theater of swordfish, sea urchins, and shouting vendors. Via Etnea — the main boulevard — runs arrow-straight toward Etna for nearly 3 km. The Roman Amphitheatre (one of Italy's largest), the Ursino Castle, and the Bellini opera house add historical depth. Catania's street food — arancini, horse meat sandwiches, granita with brioche — is legendary.
