Book a transfer from Ella to Galle — descending from Sri Lanka's misty tea country highlands to the sun-drenched southern coast and one of Asia's best-preserved colonial fort cities.
The 190 km journey takes 4 to 5 hours, descending dramatically from Ella's highland tea estates (1,000m) through the southern foothills, past Buduruwagala's ancient rock carvings and Yala National Park's edge, before reaching the tropical coast at Matara and following the scenic coastal road west to Galle.
Galle is Sri Lanka's colonial jewel — a UNESCO World Heritage fort city built by the Portuguese in the 16th century and expanded by the Dutch in the 17th century. The Galle Fort's massive ramparts enclose a charming old town of cobblestone streets, colonial-era churches, mosques, a lighthouse, boutique hotels, art galleries, and cafe-lined lanes. Walking the fort walls at sunset, with the Indian Ocean crashing below and cricket being played on the pitch inside, is one of Sri Lanka's most memorable experiences. The surrounding south coast beaches — Unawatuna, Mirissa (for whale watching), and Weligama (for surfing) — are easily accessible from Galle.
