Lake Garda is Italy's largest lake — a 51 km-long jewel stretching from the Mediterranean-climate southern shores of lemon groves and olive trees to the dramatic Alpine northern end where mountains plunge vertically into deep blue water. Sirmione, on a narrow peninsula at the southern tip, offers a spectacular Scaliger castle, Roman villa ruins (Grotte di Catullo), and natural thermal springs. Malcesine on the eastern shore has a Venetian castle and cable car to Monte Baldo for paragliding and panoramic views. Riva del Garda at the northern tip is a windsurfing and sailing mecca. Limone sul Garda's lemon terraces, Gardone Riviera's Vittoriale degli Italiani (D'Annunzio's eccentric villa), and the Gardaland theme park make this lake extraordinarily diverse.
