The Praça do Giraldo is the buzzing heart, and the Alentejo cuisine — black pork, migas, açorda, and the region's powerful red wines — is Portugal's most rustic and satisfying. The megalithic sites (cromlechs and dolmens) surrounding the city predate Stonehenge.
