Book a transfer from Malta Airport (MLA) to Valletta — from the island's international gateway to one of the world's smallest and most concentrated capital cities: a UNESCO-listed fortress city built by the Knights of St. John on a peninsula jutting into the Mediterranean.
The 8 km journey takes just 15 to 25 minutes heading northeast from Luqa Airport through the island's urban core to the fortified peninsula of Valletta.
Valletta is one of Europe's most extraordinary capitals — a tiny, UNESCO-listed fortress city packed with more historical monuments per square meter than perhaps anywhere on earth. Built from scratch in the 1560s by the Knights of St. John after they survived the Great Siege of Malta, the city is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture on a grid of steep, narrow streets between two grand harbors. St. John's Co-Cathedral houses two of Caravaggio's greatest masterpieces (including "The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist," his largest painting and the only one he ever signed). The Grand Master's Palace, the Upper and Lower Barrakka Gardens with their panoramic harbor views, the National Museum of Archaeology, and Fort St. Elmo tell the dramatic story of the Knights. Republic Street — the main artery — is a parade of churches, palaces, and cafés. The new City Gate by Renzo Piano and the adjacent Parliament building add striking modern architecture to this ancient city.
