St. John's Co-Cathedral houses two of Caravaggio's greatest masterpieces (including "The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist," his largest painting and the only one he ever signed). The Grand Master's Palace, the Upper and Lower Barrakka Gardens with their panoramic harbor views, the National Museum of Archaeology, and Fort St. Elmo tell the dramatic story of the Knights. Republic Street — the main artery — is a parade of churches, palaces, and cafés. The new City Gate by Renzo Piano and the adjacent Parliament building add striking modern architecture to this ancient city.
