About Coimbra
Coimbra was Portugal's medieval capital and has been a center of learning since 1290, when its university was founded — one of the oldest in continuous operation in the world. The UNESCO-listed University of Coimbra crowns the hilltop, and its Joanina Library is one of the most stunning Baroque libraries ever built. The black-caped students still parade through narrow medieval streets, fado music originated here (Coimbra fado is distinct from Lisbon's), and the Old Cathedral (Se Velha), the Machado de Castro Museum, and the riverside Santa Clara Monastery add layers of history. The botanical garden and the lively student nightlife along the Mondego River make Coimbra vibrant year-round.
