About Potsdam
Potsdam is Prussia's royal showcase — a city of over 150 buildings and 500 hectares of parks in the UNESCO World Heritage ensemble of palaces and gardens. Sanssouci Palace — Frederick the Great's intimate rococo summer retreat (1747) — crowns a hillside of six terraced vineyards and is the undisputed jewel: more personal and charming than any room at Versailles. The vast Neues Palais with its 200 rooms, the Orangery Palace inspired by Rome, and the Chinese House pavilion are all in the spectacular Sanssouci Park. The Dutch Quarter (Hollandisches Viertel) — 134 red-brick houses built for Dutch artisans in the 1730s — is now a trendy district of cafes and boutiques. The Cecilienhof Palace hosted the 1945 Potsdam Conference where Truman, Stalin, and Churchill divided post-war Europe.
