Book a transfer from Colombo to Sigiriya — home to the spectacular Lion Rock fortress, Sri Lanka's most iconic landmark and a UNESCO World Heritage Site rising 200 meters above the surrounding jungle.
The 170 km journey takes 4 to 5 hours heading northeast from Colombo into the Cultural Triangle of Sri Lanka's dry zone. The route passes through coconut plantations, small towns, and increasingly dry scrubland before revealing the dramatic flat-topped rock of Sigiriya rising from the plains.
Sigiriya (Lion Rock) is a 5th-century fortress and palace built atop a massive 200-meter granite column by King Kashyapa. The climb to the summit passes through beautifully landscaped water gardens, the famous Sigiriya Frescoes (ancient paintings of celestial maidens), the Mirror Wall, and the enormous Lion Paws gateway. The panoramic views from the top across the endless Sri Lankan jungle canopy are unforgettable. Nearby Pidurangala Rock offers a stunning alternative viewpoint of Sigiriya itself. The ancient city of Polonnaruwa and the Dambulla Cave Temple are also within easy reach.
