Book a transfer from Edinburgh to Inverness — from Scotland's dramatic castle-crowned capital to the gateway to the Highlands: a compact, friendly city on the banks of the River Ness, the jumping-off point for Loch Ness, the Isle of Skye, and some of Europe's most spectacular landscapes.
The 250 km journey takes 3 to 3.5 hours heading north via the A9 through some of Scotland's most stunning scenery — crossing the Forth Bridge, passing through Perth, climbing into the Cairngorms National Park with its mountain passes and whisky distilleries, before descending to the Moray Firth and Inverness.
Inverness is the capital of the Scottish Highlands — a compact, welcoming city at the head of the Great Glen where the River Ness flows into the Moray Firth. The city is the ideal base for exploring the Highlands: Loch Ness and its legendary monster are just 15 minutes south, the Culloden Battlefield (1746, the last pitched battle on British soil) is nearby, and the dramatic landscapes of Glen Affric, the Black Isle, and the North Coast 500 route begin at the city's doorstep. Inverness itself offers the Victorian Market, Inverness Castle (currently being redeveloped as a visitor attraction), pleasant riverside walks, excellent whisky bars, and a lively dining scene featuring local seafood and Highland beef. The city's position on the Moray Firth means bottlenose dolphins can often be spotted from the shore. The nearby Clava Cairns (Bronze Age burial chambers that inspired Outlander's standing stones) add prehistoric mystique.
