The gardens — designed by André Le Nôtre — are a masterwork of symmetry: mile-long perspectives, 1,400 fountains (the Musical Fountains shows run in summer), the Grand Canal, and the hidden groves create a landscape as magnificent as the palace itself. Marie Antoinette's Petit Trianon and Hameau de la Reine (a fairytale farm where she played shepherdess) add intimate contrast to the grandeur.
