The 560 km journey takes 9 to 10 hours via the N10 highway, crossing the High Atlas Mountains through the spectacular Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260m), descending through the Draa Valley, passing the kasbahs of Ouarzazate and the Dades and Todra gorges, before reaching the desert town of Merzouga on the edge of the Sahara.
Merzouga is a small desert village at the foot of Erg Chebbi — Morocco's most spectacular sand sea, with golden-orange dunes reaching up to 150 meters high. Camel treks into the dunes at sunset, overnight stays in traditional Berber desert camps under a canopy of stars, and sunrise over the dunes from the top of Erg Chebbi are among Morocco's most unforgettable experiences. The surrounding area includes Khamlia village (home to Gnaoua musicians), seasonal desert lakes (Dayet Srji, attracting flamingos), and 4x4 excursions into the deeper desert.
