Book a transfer from Barcelona to Montserrat — Catalonia's most sacred site, a Benedictine monastery perched high on a spectacular serrated mountain that rises dramatically from the surrounding plain.
The 60 km journey takes 1 to 1.5 hours heading northwest from Barcelona. The route passes through the Llobregat valley before the extraordinary jagged peaks of Montserrat appear — a mountain so unusually shaped that it inspired Gaudi and, some say, Wagner's Parsifal.
The Montserrat Monastery (Santa Maria de Montserrat) has been a pilgrimage site for over 1,000 years. The Black Madonna (La Moreneta), a 12th-century wooden statue, is Catalonia's patron saint and draws millions of visitors. The boys' choir (Escolania), one of Europe's oldest, performs daily. Beyond the monastery, the mountain offers spectacular hiking trails through bizarre rock formations, a funicular railway to higher viewpoints, and on clear days, views stretching to the Pyrenees and Mallorca. The Sant Joan trail and Santa Cova path are the most popular walks.
