Book a transfer from Naples to Pompeii — from the vibrant, pizza-obsessed capital of southern Italy to the world's most extraordinary archaeological site: a complete Roman city frozen in time by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.
The 25 km journey takes just 30 to 45 minutes heading southeast along the base of Mount Vesuvius, whose brooding presence grows ever more dramatic as you approach the ancient city it destroyed nearly 2,000 years ago.
Pompeii is the world's most important archaeological site — an entire Roman city of 11,000 people preserved in extraordinary detail by the volcanic ash of Vesuvius. Walking through Pompeii's streets is a time machine: you'll see the Forum, the amphitheater (the oldest surviving Roman amphitheater), the bakeries with carbonized bread, the thermopolium (ancient fast-food counters), the stunning House of the Faun and House of the Vettii with their vivid frescoes, the plaster casts of victims frozen in their final moments, and the remarkably well-preserved brothel (Lupanare). The site is vast — over 150 acres — and can take a full day to explore. Nearby Herculaneum offers a smaller but even better-preserved companion site, and a climb to the rim of Vesuvius itself completes the experience.
